As the oldest in my family, I saw how screens affected my younger cousins and created family tensions. This wasn’t an issue in my childhood, so I started questioning the impact of screens on child development. Concerned about this and passionate about digital design, I wanted to explore how design can help children aged 0 to 6, who are vulnerable to excessive screen time.
I interviewed 21 parents of children aged 0 to 6 to understand how digital technology impacts their daily lives and the tensions around screen use. My focus was on how technology fits into the home and how parents balance screen time with their children's motor and social development.
My thesis explores screenless digital devices and their effects on young children’s motor and social development. I suggest that these devices can lessen the negative effects of screens by encouraging interaction and movement. By emphasizing parental involvement, my project offers alternatives to traditional digital tools, enhancing the parent-child experience at home.
With 9 students in our master's program, each with a distinct thesis topic, the goal was to create a cohesive editorial design that reflects our collective work and the program itself. The aim was to print our theses in a physical format and publish a website showcasing our theses in a digital version.
We had 3 distinct groups: graphic design & editorial, web design & development (which I was part of), and printing. The challenge was working as a true team—aligning with each group, coordinating, communicating, and adapting to move the project forward.
➔ WHAT I've learned through this project
The result of hard work is always rewarding. It takes dedication and perseverance to see the fruits of your labor, but the results will always come. It was incredibly satisfying to hold a year’s worth of effort in a thesis we could physically touch. With hard work, determination, motivation, and a strong team, we can accomplish great things—because great things are never achieved alone.
